Exercise 1: Read the following monologues which compare and contrasting pairs of pictures. Match the lettered
sentences to their appropriate group according to the Speaking section (p.54). (5 points)
(A) The common theme in the photos is relaxation. (B)In both of these pictures we see people
doing things they enjoy. (C) However, the main difference between both photos is the atmosphere. In
the first photo, the girl probably prefers solitude. (D) In contrast, the group of friends from the second
picture seem like the outgoing and sociable type. While the girl in the first picture is in a quiet library
sitting between bookstalls, the group in the second picture seem to be camping somewhere in the
woods. (E) The moods between a quiet library and a joyful campsite are totally distinguishable.

Speaking Strategy:
When you do a photo comparison task, follow these steps.
1 Describe each photo in general (e.g. mention the people, where they are, speculate about what is happening.)
2 Describe any obvious differences or similarities between the photos.
3 Speculate about how the people in the photos are feeling, or what they are thinking or saying.
